Limoux Carnival: A First-Time Visitor's Guide

Published 22 October 2026

What the Fécos and Goudils mean, where the carnival happens and what to check before planning a winter visit.

A tradition in the town's everyday streets

Limoux's carnival takes place around Place de la République, with masked participants and traditional music moving beneath its arcades. The tourist office describes Fécos, the organised costumed bands, and Goudils, people joining the celebration in disguise. These are useful words to recognise before you arrive.

Think of the visit as time in the town rather than a performance to rush into and out of. Allow time to find your bearings, listen and watch how participants move through the square.

Check the correct year's programme

This guide explains the tradition; it is not a confirmed schedule for 2027. At the time of checking, the official tourism page still displayed its 2026 programme. Do not use those dates to book a future trip. Follow the official carnival information and our events calendar for dated announcements, and verify the organiser's programme before making non-refundable arrangements.

Daytime and evening outings can offer different experiences. Choose only after checking the published programme, your transport and where you will stay.

Watch with room for the bands

Choose a place where you can see without blocking the route. Ask before taking a close portrait and follow instructions from organisers. For families, think ahead about meeting points, crowds, noise and how long children will be comfortable outside.

The tourist office's explanation places Goudils behind the music rather than mixed into the organised band. Watching first and asking locally is a better introduction than assuming every part of the procession is open to join.

Make a wider visit of it

Leave time for the town beyond the carnival: a walk beside the Aude, a café stop and a look at what else is on. Read The Sleeping Giant Awakens for an introduction to Limoux, and our Friday market guide if your visit includes that day.
